International Driving Permit for Italy - documents and travel preparation

IDP for Italy: do you need an International Driving Permit in Rome?

If you’re visiting Italy with a non-EU licence (USA, Canada, Australia, etc.), this is the simple checklist to avoid rental or police issues — especially for scooters.

Italy rules for non-EU licences (the practical version)

In Italy, a non-EU driving licence is generally not meant to be used alone: you should carry either an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official Italian translation of your licence, plus your original licence. Some rental desks won’t ask — until they do. And if you’re stopped, “I didn’t know” won’t help.

Quick take

  • Non-EU licence? Bring your original licence + IDP (or official Italian translation).
  • U.S. travellers: get the IDP through AAA (or AATA) before you travel — avoid “online IDP” scams.

Who it’s for

  • Visitors from USA / Canada / Australia driving in Italy.
  • Anyone renting a car or scooter who wants zero paperwork surprises.
  • Riders booking Self-Drive who want to be 100% compliant before arrival.

Note: EU/EEA licences are usually a different story (often no IDP needed). This page is mainly for non-EU guests.

FAQ

Do I really need an IDP in Italy with a U.S. licence?

In practice, yes — you should assume you do. Italy expects non-EU licences to be accompanied by an IDP or an official Italian translation. Some travellers get lucky without it, but it’s not worth the risk: a rental counter can refuse the vehicle, or you can be fined during a check.

Can I get an IDP online?

Be careful: many “IDP” websites sell unofficial documents that are not valid. For U.S. licences, the commonly accepted issuers are AAA and AATA. If a website looks like it’s “issuing” an IDP with no real verification, treat it as a red flag.

Is the IDP valid without my original licence?

No. The IDP is basically a translation booklet. You must carry your original driving licence with it. Think of it as: “licence + IDP = valid set”.

How long is an IDP valid?

It depends on the issuing country/model. For most U.S. travellers, the IDP is typically valid for 1 year. Always check the expiry date printed on the permit and make sure your home licence is also valid.

Do I need a motorcycle licence to ride a Vespa 125cc?

You must be legally authorised to ride that vehicle category on your home licence. In many countries, a car licence alone does not grant motorcycle privileges. Some rentals might still hand you the keys, but that doesn’t make it legal (or safe) if you’re stopped or have an accident. If you’re unsure, choose our Vespa with Driver option.
